How to Start Activated Carbon From Coconut Shell Business TE-112

Share

Coconut shell-based activated carbon can be produced utilizing the raw materials available. It comes in pellet, granules, and powder forms, all of which have a high capacity to absorb various gases, vapors, and colloidal solids when in the gaseous or liquid phase.

Carbon has a wide range of applications in industries such as gas and vapor absorption, catalytic reactions, vegetable oil, and sugar solutions depolarization.

To purify liquids, powdered activated carbon is added to the liquid, agitated, and then filtered.

Granular activated carbon is used for purifying gases and liquids and is commonly utilized in a vertical carbon column. Additionally, it’s often used by the oil refining, chemical, and pharmaceutical sectors for decolorizing.

The use of activated carbon is expected to increase in the next few years due to growth in the pharmaceutical and agro-based oil industries. Both Indian and foreign markets have a great demand for high-quality activated carbon.

Activated Carbon From Coconut Shell Manufacturing Process

The activation process consists of two phases. First, the coconut shell is turned into charcoal via carbonization, which is commonly done in mud pits, brick kilns, and metal portable kilns.

Coconut shell charcoal is activated with steam in a rotary kiln heated to between 900°C and 1,100°C, in a controlled environment.

Steam and charcoal react at the internal surface level, resulting in heightened absorption. Temperature is a major factor contributing to activation.

For optimal results, the reaction should take place between 900°C and 1100°C; below 900°C the reaction is too slow and above 1100°C, the charcoal begins to be lost through diffusion.
