Many metals are used to make components for mechanical systems. These metals include titanium, aluminum, and stainless steel. To ensure that the component can be installed easily in an existing system, it must be constructed with precision.
It must also perform as well or better than the original component. A precise cutting system is required for precise component manufacturing. This is why waterjet metal cutting is so ideal.
Why Metal Cutting with Waterjet Machines is a Good Choice
Waterjet cutting machines offer many benefits, including the ability to create metal industrial components.
Waterjet cutting has greater versatility than laser cutting machines. You can use it to cut titanium and other extremely thick metals. Waterjet systems can cut metal up to 305mm thick. These thicknesses can’t be achieved by laser cutting without deforming metal.
Laser cutting systems are expensive. Waterjet cutting is cheaper, and machines cost less than $40,000. Large, high-end machines can cost up to $100,000.
Material Deformation:
Lasers use intense heat to cut metals. The heat can cause the metal to burr. The metal may also harden at the edges of cuts when it cools. Waterjet metal cutting machines use cold water and an abrasive to cut through the material.
Because there is no heat, the metal structure will not change or deform along the edges of the cut.
Most stainless steel is machined using traditional CNC mills or lathes. This has the disadvantage that stainless steel can be work-hardened. To ensure that work material doesn’t get damaged by heat-affected areas, the machining process must be optimized to disburse heat.
The actual cutting tools (either high-speed steel, or carbide) must be maintained sharp. Operators often have rough edges after machining stainless steel with a CNC machine. A file or secondary deburring is required to finish any CNC-machined part.
Plasma cutters and lasers are used often to cut thin gauge stainless steel. Either of these methods can produce extremely high temperatures.
Plasma cutters are rough-cutting tools and require many secondary processes to achieve a clean finish. The CO2 laser is fast, but not efficient in fine detail.
While solid-state lasers can be more precise than CO2 for detail cutting, neither is as efficient as a waterjet machine.
Speed and Precision:
Laser systems are well-known for their speed. These are just a few of the many reasons waterjet cutting is the best metal cutting service. This is the ideal system for creating high-performance metal parts.
