The continuing pandemic has left many in Australia unwilling to return to regular office life. It’s not that everyone is desperate to always work from home, but many want to see at least some kind of change from their previous lives as commuters. The result is now many who are unsure of how to make that change.
Two popular options that are emerging are firstly the continuing of working in the “home office,” and secondly the use of an individual coworking space to get away from home.
Some may not have considered the second option before, but there are some good reasons to keep it in mind as you consider how you want your working life to continue in the post-pandemic world.
A Home Office Has Opportunity Cost
Some people like the idea of a home office for the financial savings it can bring. That’s understandable, but those people may not have considered the opportunity cost involved. Getting a coworking space means you’re around other businesses and entrepreneurs like yourself. There’s great scope for networking and making valuable connections and contacts that you can use to grow your business.
Coworking Spaces Remove Distraction
Some people think they’ll be able to concentrate better on work when they’re at home, but this just isn’t the case. It’s much harder to focus on work when you’re at home because there are too many distractions and temptations.
From household chores to the TV, and even your own bed. Working from home makes pulling yourself away from work much easier than if you’re in a proper office environment.
An Office Gives Your Life Structure
With a coworking space, you can enjoy the benefits that an office will bring without as many of the headaches, like excessive costs. One of those benefits is that your life can regain structure, boundaries, and balance.
When using a home office, it’s easy to put work off until later in the day, after which people find themselves working later and later at night, sleeping at more and more unusual hours, and generally losing that healthy sense of rhythm. It can lead to a number of health problems.
Besides the time imbalance, there’s also a lack of boundaries. Work and life spill into each other and it becomes hard to focus on either one with the right amount of energy.
It’s good to have a defined place where work happens, and another space where rest, relaxation, and recreation happen. Using a coworking space can restore that balance.
Home Office Takes Up Valuable Space
It might not cost you money, but another thing you lose when working at home is space! In a small living space, you might lose a table or other surface to your work equipment.
In a larger home, you might be giving up a spare bedroom in order to have your home office, or possibly a garage. Free up that home space to give yourself play space for the kids; a place to have dinner as a family again, or even a guest room for when you have visitors. Keep work in the office, and home life at home.
Coworking Spaces Offer the Most Benefits
It’s not as though working from home is all bad. There are clearly some benefits to it. The bigger picture, however, suggests that more of us can benefit from having a more defined and structured workspace. We can have that in an affordable and accessible way when we use coworking space, which is why in the battle between coworking spaces and working from home, the former stands out as the better choice.
